he driveway is empty by 7:45. The cereal bowls are still in the
sink. And for the first time in ten weeks, the house is quiet
enough to hear the refrigerator hum.
You thought you’d feel relief. Instead you’re standing in the
kitchen, coffee in hand, wondering what to do with your own
morning.
This is the part of back-to-school nobody warns you about.
Not the supply lists or the calendar Tetris, but the strange hush
that moves in behind it. Summer asked everything of you: your
patience, your presence, the particular skill of turning three
ingredients into a snack four kids will agree on. And now, without
much ceremony, it’s asking something else entirely. It wants you to
remember who you are when no one is asking you for anything.
Recovery doesn’t happen all at once. It happens in small,
